Ambassador for Global Health and delegates visited Waniati Waiting Home.

We are truly honored to meet Mr. Chris Canna, Australia's Ambassador for Global Health and Dr. Sonia McCarthy, Australia's Principal Sector Specialist for Health and two other delegates from the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade visited the maternal waiting home in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

The visit is to provide with an insight on local initiatives that contributing to improving maternal and child health in Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea has the second highest Maternal Mortality Rate compared to Afghanistan. Maternal Mortality is very high in remote communities due to unsupervised delivery and inaccessible to family planning.

Supporting maternal waiting home is one of the effective ways to bridge the gap between rural communities and hospitals, directly reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by ensuring women are in the right place when labour begins.

Thank you for recognizing Waniati Maternal Waiting Home and coming here to visit pregnant mothers and staff.

We truly appreciate the opportunity to strengthen the connection between Waniati Maternal Waiting Home and Australian High Commission Papua New Guinea
